Yesterday the highlight of the season started – the playoffs. After not losing a single game since the 22nd of October, won the series with seven points and also getting the tournament title after a convincing victory against Piranha Chur in the final, the feeling in the team is definitely good. Some could say that we are riding some kind of success wave. I would rather say that we reap after hard work.
When the series was started this fall we stood with a unformed team, new roles, new coaches and brand new conditions compared to the series before. How strong we were in comparison to the other teams was something that probably no one knew, neither did we. What was clear was that we both were forced and prepared to work hard for success – and I have to say that we have done that.
After a long season with many, diligent training sessions, analyzations and discussions, old ideas, new ideas and revised ideas we now stand with a impressing basic series behind us. The blind spots that existed after the loss of old players have in a good way been filled by other players – both by players developing their qualities but also through players getting the chance to play a new role in the team. One of the clearest examples: She who was denied playing last year’s final on two fives this year won the total points league, is a definite bet in the national team and still seems to grow in every game we play. When we as series winners now are put up against the series eight in the quarterfinal series we are now without a doubt big favorites. Maybe we’re even favorites in winning it all. The question is: How comfortable do we think it is? Is it a nice little energy pill that feeds a already good feeling or does it feel like a uncomfortable wound that say that we have to succeed?
Everyone who has ever played the role as favorite know that it isn’t always easy and it isn’t all that comfortable either. When something suddenly isn’t right or when the opponents simply do better things it is easy to let negative feelings like fear, disappointment and suffocating demands take focus from how you actually should solve the task you’re put up to. The reverse – when you as a underdog have nothing to lose – is soften easier to handle and build energy around. No matter if we now dress ourselves in the title as favorites, downwind birds or success wave surfers, it’s for me comforting to know that we have the qualities to win over all teams in the league and that it’s up to ourselves to get these out when it is really needed. But the knowledge of the success so far not being a coincidence but the result of us doing good things, there’s exactly the same possibility for us to create this success in a playoffs.
So, with all respect for a lot being able to and will happen, I believe in the series for us part ending as well as it so far has been going – as long as we don’t literally believe in that the imaginary success wave will do it for us and we ourselves stop working for it.
With that said: Happy playoffs to all playoffers out there!
